Over at @lawgunsmoney.bsky.social, some thoughts on how the term "AI" is increasingly being used to describe all algorithmic tools, new and preexisting, as a way of obscuring the fact that LLM-based text and image generators are effectively useless. With examples from my own workplace.

The legal profession has largely fallen for this fomo as well and it's giving me heartburn as a rare voice of reason. These people still largely haven't gotten over the transition from fax to email, I have zero confidence in their ability to comprehend and ethically use LLMs. 🤦

I hate this stuff, but it's so lovely to finally have other people saying what translators have been trying to say for several years. LLMs can't do what we do, and will probably never be able to. Even if you tidy up machine translated output, it's worse and takes longer than a human.

I knew the cost was a lot but not that it was enough to _stop it_ being competitive with humans if you have to pay for it - that seems a huge problem, as people are currently not paying and won't want to go £0 to £lots
