If you do want an appointment to this, you will likely have to get approved by your city council. This is something that bungled one progressive candidate in my city when our conservative council saw that she attended Pride and has been at Democratic events. Know your council if you want to run.

Our mayor was desperate for qualified candidates but the council shot her down and refused to talk about why other than vaguely calling her an activist. You can see how it went starting at 1:32:40 here.
