I’ve always felt the worst thing is the way it has enabled zillions of people who used to be de facto isolated and contained because of their abhorrent views/bonkers conspiracy theories to find & connect with one another and do start doing real damage.

Yeah. It has historically incentivised people going for the most extreme opinions, thus making sure the worst, loudest voices are the ones most heard.

I personally think the root cause for this is that people take themselves (or themself?) much too serious. They think posting is a declaration or a postulation of will. Neither is true. Posting is most of the time just: a) shitposting b) their own echo chamber amplification c) venting d) shitposting

no, we did not bring down the government by poasting "tories out" fifteen trillion times in a row but also, i made friends here. people i hang out with from time to time. social media is the thing we've been doing for tens of thousands of years: human communication
