Yeah 2016 felt late to me too ... but I think early Twitter is definitely classic period. Maybe the classic period ends in 2013, when Hulk Hogan (funded by Peter Thiel) filed the lawsuit that brought down Gawker. The chilling effect of that lawsuit cannot be understated.

The rise of Twitter, as early as 2009-10, definitely has an impact. I recall people griping that blogs were dead because everyone was using that energy on Twitter. (fwiw, I suspect Mastodon may be a better service to probe this, as there are many old heads over there…)

It’s weird because there are sort of two different blogospheres (or quasi-blogospheres): the corporate/startup one and the looser/casual one, and a lot of the latter simply switched to tweeting even as former kept going for awhile and had their own strange arc as a culture/business.
