[Screaming as I realize too late that I've hit "merge visible" instead of "merge down", and have no idea when I last saved, so exiting to regain the layers is too much of a gamble]

Could maybe save your current file as something else and then reopen the old file to check? That's what I usually do when that happens. >.>
