I suppose the argument is that if a third of voters don't vote for a third party they could have actually won and showing increased support for those is how the tide turns but... yeah, I'm in a seat so safe it doesn't matter if I vote as I won't be heard

yeah, but they're not all going to vote for the same 3rd party (unless you literally just have "the third party" which doesn't really change anything about the situation)
