Has anyone out in BlueSky academia looked into incorporating AI programming assistants in their comp-sci courses? My excellent chum @joezuntz.bsky.social is re-designing the Edinburgh physics computer programming course to do just that (see ๐Ÿงต๐Ÿ‘‡).

Interesting approach. I had a student try to use chatGTP for intro Python class. I think it mostly confused him.

Iโ€™d be very wary. There are issues of theft (AI models are trained on datasets where permission was not sought prior) & environmental issues. For an overview of the latter, please see www.forbes.com/sites/cindyg...
I will be avoiding the use of AI as I canโ€™t see how it can be used ethically atm

I see weak students using ChatGPT for assistance on programming problems who just get confused by the output. They assume itโ€™s giving an answer that should work, when itโ€™s more a hint at an answer. Mostly my sense is it impedes learning.
