At the time, Kaufman publicly declared that he had agonized alone over this decision, wrestling with his conscience. But in 1976, FBI documents released under the FOIA revealed he privately discussed the sentence with the prosecutors and repeatedly called the FBI to expedite the executions.
During the trial, Ethel’s brother, David Greenlgass, who was also arrested as part of the spy ring, testified that she typed up his handwritten notes for a Soviet courier. But his 1950 grand jury testimony—only released in 2015—revealed that he had lied under oath in order to save his wife’s life.
