Today in 1968, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons opened for signature. Only four states have never been a party to this landmark arms control agreement: India, Israel, Pakistan, and South Sudan (North Korea acceded in December 1985 but withdrew in April 2003).

The treaty entered into force on March 5, 1970. Today, it has 190 states parties. On February 14, 1972, a stamp commemorating the treaty was issued by the United Nations.
