On one hand, it’s ambient bellicosity that goes with American Exceptionalism; on the other, this kind of casual advocacy accustoming elite audiences to the inevitability of conflict is a self-fulfilling prophesy. These coy pieces that deny they’re advocating war were a fixture ahead of invading Iraq

Exactly this. But it feels like they're veering away from the usual romanticism of being greeted as liberators to a more pernicious Nixon/Trump style imagining of a "silent majority" (who of course mirrors these pundits) waiting to rise up. That domestic dogma likely has an effect.
