The oviraptorid dinosaur Citipati is named after a guardian deity of the same name in Himalayan Buddhism. While oviraptorids like Citipati were originally thought to be egg thieves, we now know that they were actually dedicated parents. 1/2

This name reflects our shifting understanding of these animals, as oviraptorids have gone from being viewed as thieves (Oviraptor literally means egg thief) to being recognized as fearsome guardians (Citipati is the archenemy of thieves in Himalayan Buddhist traditions).
