Latitude gives north and south, longitude gives east and west…

I can see that now that I've finished my coffee. Lines of latitude are east-west lines running parallel to the equator, so if you know which latitude you're on, it could be 23° N or 23° S, which is useless unless you have the longitude (north-south lines).
