Sometimes I think about how much more popular and influential Burroughs' writing and ideas could have been had he not gotten sidetracked with that "cut-up" bullshit... he really had a fascinating and uniquely American prose voice that he destroyed in a fit of delirium.

It's tough to save artists from themselves. I keep thinking I can use cut-up to open up stuff in development but it never works. I always do better just hitting an off-note or tangent in the writing and running with that.
