Read about the 150 limit in the past as it applies to communities living with each other, the amount of personal connections we can manage, etc. But it had to do with interpersonal interactions. I think it would be even less online. Because most people aren't going to make the same connections.

I haven't read the whole thing yet, but they explicitly reference online communities. There's a lot of anthropological / sociological research on optimal community size.
