Science fiction has some amazing stories about the danger of fascism — so why haven't we listened? Why did Hitler become a funny meme on YouTube instead of a cautionary tale?
And why are so many people so keen to censor books that challenge their worldview?
Please listen to this one.
I’m not writing anything subversive, but seeing talk of book bans, banning language, makes me want to. Though I think even my autobiography coming out next month might end up banned in certain future scenarios.
I wonder if in popular culture it stemmed from laughing in the face of the horror and terror of WW2 and 1, a way to make them so small and harmless we can make fun of them. It's an excellent question of culture for my mom, who remembers WW2 quite well even though she was small.
So late to this - we were out of town and very offline last week - but a banger as always. Thanks for the Genesis Of The Daleks love, one of my all-time favourite Doctor Who stories and not even slightly subtle, even by Terry Nation's didactic cosh to the head standards.
You’ve heard Robert Shearman’s “Jubilee?” Asks the very pertinent question: if the Daleks in DOCTOR WHO are sci-fi cyborg Nazis, why does everyone insist on making them adorable?? 😬
