I feel so bad for this person. They've cast aside their ability to enjoy art for the pleasure of rejecting things they deem unworthy. It's like passing up true love to spend the rest of one's life amassing followers by calling models ugly on Instagram.

I think you start to dial that back by enjoying "low brow" things ironically. And eventually you realize after a while that there is no longer any irony involved when you experience joy. You just like what you like.

It's even more tragic because CinemaSins is *terrible* criticism.

I don’t think it was willingly cast aside, so much as cultivated by a steady diet of what was in front of him with increasingly little good faith or media literacy in why its made.

Yeah. Good critical thinking enhances your enjoyment of art. Dunking is just looking for 'gotchas.' I love a lot of "flawed" art, but can see past the flaws and admire it for what it is. I'd hope everyone can do that.

My favorite version of this is criticizing the actions of fictional characters as if they’re subpar choices in a video game

I personally like watching CinemaWins - a channel that finds all the little (and big) joys in movies.

Once on THE A-TEAM they were fending off a bunch of bad guys & they had an inverted gas canister that was placed on a hand truck & pointed towards the enemy. BA Baracus would whack the valve assembly off with a sledgehammer, & the canister would launch like a rocket towards the enemy.

It is hard to turn the critical brain off. I think a person needs to also look for the good or just appreciate when something is just silly or weird. It is the only way to survive and enjoy media. Embrace cringe but write the thesis on the side.

Speaking as a professional pointer-outer-of-mistakes: what the hell, dude, get over yourself! I have zero problems enjoying films and books and tv shows and comics that I’m not working on! And even when I am DEEPLY engaging in editing a comic—I’m still allowed to fall in love with it.
