Who is THEY?! I cannot stand this man! You can't just stick a "they say" or "they thought" in front of every crackpot idea or lie you can think of. They say I'm marrying Andre 3000 next month! They say I'm the next writer on BATMAN! I mean, should we all just start doing this?

Also, apologies for misreading! Trump uses "they say" for two purposes--to dismiss accurate scientific or historical information or to cement a lie in the public consciousness. I was mad about the second here, but he was going for the first. Both are pet peeves.

I’m pretty sure that in this case, “they” means “historians, contemporary accounts, the general public, his own writings” etc.
