I was reading both at the time and my view was that Image was all style no substance, looked gorgeous, nothing under the hood, and that Valiant was the opposite, telling great stories with mostly workmanlike art. Was into both.

Image was flashy but it had some moments of heart. I liked the conspiracy laden, espionage oriented stuff Wildstorm (than Homage Studios) was doing. And I still enjoy Savage Dragon.
