as someone who went to Catholic school and therefore had to take 12 years of religion class, it is so fucked to see public schools legally pressured into doing shit even WE didn’t have to do our other textbooks were just normal textbooks! I learned the same wrong American history as everybody else!

I grew up in the, basically literal, Catholic theocracy that was Ireland in the 70s/80s and even we learned proper history. At no point was the Bible considered a historical document.

I went to Catholic school too, including a Catholic university, but Catholics don't lean on the bible as much as other Christians because we also have "church tradition" and we were taught that both were equally valid.

in fact I remember - and I blame the ever-encroaching evangelical energy of right-wing Catholicism for this - that when I was a youth minister, “Catholic schools today put Jesus in a box and restrict him to one daily class” was a prevailing complaint from the leading voices in program development

My experience was similar to yours. In fact, we even had full discussion of birth control options in health class, despite that being against Catholic doctrine. (No idea how common that is though)
