I know it's not the same and this feels really similar to the conversations I have with folks about personal choices for school for their children. Even folks that support good policies for public schools often opt out of the communities they claim to fight for.

Very much. I understand parents wanting "the best" for their kids but after our oldest did 3 yrs of pre-K in a majority low-income, majority minority public preschool, I felt committed to staying in that community and doing as much as I could to improve things for all our kids. I felt

The "other people's kids"* argument remains true and education is a good visible example. Both in K-12 and public higher-ed. I often wonder (OK not really) if someone is so proud of their school or university, why their own kids aren't there... *Lisa Delpit wrote about this decades ago.
