Like, find me any career field that wants its ranks filled with stupid people. I’ll take a smart custodian to mop over someone who is stupid, because if they’re stupid I’ve got to spend precious time holding their hand on everything.

My first few years in the Army, I was in the Chemical Corps, which has one of the lowest ASVAB score requirements. But many of our Soldiers were very smart kids! Some were from very disadvantaged backgrounds and needed a way out, and some just needed money for college.

If you look at the idea of 2-up and 2-down you absolutely have to have smart and engaged folks. As a Cpl (E-4) who routinely filled an E-5 position, I was expected to be able to step up to E-7 at need. You need folks with brains to make it work.
