The Sex Pistols were a boy band created by Malcolm McLaren, to promote the clothes sold by the fashion boutique SEX which he ran with his then wife Vivienne Westwood. (So much for punk being authentic!)

McLaren lit the touch paper, what happened after that was completely out of his control, UK punk was ready to happen and would have happened one way or another anyway. Calling the Sex Pistols a "boy band" is a bit silly.
