I read once that the point of owning a Jaguar was to show the world you were rich enough to afford your own personal mechanic.

I think I've seen the same quote. The British sports/performance car (and its antithesis, the Land Rover) also seem to attract the Gentleman Tinkerer, who can also afford a mechanic, but would rather do it himself.
