The first time I heard “as the crow flies,” I understood it right away and didn’t require any further explanation. I still remember it: I told a person where I was and she said I’m about a mile away—as the crow flies—and I grasped the idea immediately

My dad was a boatman and would use the phrase all the time. “Fell out the coconut tree” feels old timey to me but not weird. It makes total sense her mom would use it.
