Yes, I think everyone understands that. Not sure how it's relevant though. My point is that Britain did better under the Romans. Both societies stole and used slaves. The Romans are thought to have been more civilised in the same way the EU isn't perfect but better than the Brexit Britain

Watching today's election in France, far more important in the world than the recent UK one for a number of reasons. Among them, the RN wants French support to Ukraine reduced. It does look like they won't get an overall majority now though.

After criticizing Johnson's majority, we owe it to truth and decency to be honest about Starmer's too. Johnson's government actually got 10% more of the popular vote. Neither deserve unrestricted power in my opinion. Elective dictatorship rules the UK.

They come from legal convention and royal prerogative. Think of May's 1st term, Truss, Sunak etc. They were legally PM, unelected to the role and unpopular just as many who even voted Labour didn't want Starmer as PM.

The popular mandate doesn't legally count in the UK. It's up to politicians to decide whether they personally want to honour it, how to do so and Starmer is patchy on the subject, being more opportunistic than a believer.

Some parties have formed coalitions and may arguably have represented the popular vote if they represented more than 50%. That would have been more democratic albeit still majority rule and not perfect democracy. Turnout used to be a lot higher too, which strengthens popular mandate.

Bullshit! Mandate as a concept predates democracy and is as old as power itself. For example there's such a thing as royal mandate. These days people try to twist it so that all mandate sounds popular but this is clearly wrong and just a pipe dream. Here's a mandate from 1412.

That's a legal mandate, same as a dictator's. It's whatever the law says as opposed to being a popular mandate. Starmer doesn't have a popular mandate and wouldn't even have a legal one in fully European countries except Belarus (Russian client state) as far as I'm aware.

My takeaway is that being hard right hasn't worked. Not only did they lose seats to Lib Dems but they also lost hard-right MP's. Historically the party has reacted strongly to ballot success and I wouldn't rule out a move towards the centre, hopefully with an open door to the EU.

That's the opportunist take. The democratic one requires knowledge of the public. Some politicians, e.g. Macron, claim to take the democratic stance. Starmer himself suggests he does although I'm sceptical that it's more of an intention as he understands the past more than the present or the future.

Starmer's party got 1.7% more vote share than Corbyn's. He didn't gain so much as Tories lost votes to Lib Dems and Reform. Corbyn's Labour actually got more votes than Starmer's as more people were prepared to participate by voting.
