Thank you. Itโs so demoralizing to see people eagerly embrace such bad-faith panic.

Anyway, Iโm out. I tried beating back the ocean on Afghanistan, Snowden, Yemen, etc. Itโs not worth it. I truly hope this doesnโt end in disaster but it feels more likely than ever. We have self destructed because some rich people on TV had a panic attack after a debate. Good for us.

Itโs been weird as hell to see liberals mobilize, from donors to commentators, from celebrities to newspaper editors, to push Biden off-stage but they still canโt manage a coherent message against Trump or even talk about his fascist nonsense that much. Sort of speaks to priorities, you know?

The amount of confident opinions being expressed in this situation (relative to the information available) has been making me think a lot about this paper.

Neat. 9 in two whole weeks. A veritable tidal wave. Only 278 to go and then weโll finally solve the problem of defeating Trump forever.

Sure, and if Jesus returns in glory to judge the living and the dead none of this will matter. But Iโm sticking with things we can prove and suggest the magic 8-ball approach leads to overreaction and needless chaos.

Plenty of Republicans called on Trump to step down in 2016 and he won. None called on Clinton to drop out and she led by +6 and still lost. I think youโre putting far too much weight into these things than is warranted.

6 out of 217 is hardly a groundswell, though. Itโs like 2% of the elected House members and less than 1% when you count senators. Surely something supposedly felt by everyone would have some sort of evidence beyond vibes and whispers?

A consistent principle emerging the last 2 weeks is just how badly out of touch the mainstream media and party elites are from the bulk of people in the country. Some kind of feared shift to Trump isnโt happening, and the screaming about a shift will be self-fulfilling. They are incepting a crisis.

There is zero evidence anyone is ditching Biden for Trump or RFK, in other words. As the polling bears out.

You forget that Trump was on stage too and most people who saw both had a stronger reaction against Trump. Pretending that Trump is this motionless natural force we must work against, instead of a deeply unpopular figure who is even less able to speak or move under scrutiny, should moderate that.

And while the steady drumbeat of bad stories will probably affect that further (itโs why there is so much criticism) there is no measurable evidence that the party is โturningโ on him apart from whisper campaigns no one can verify. The endless yelling is self-fulfilling but in response to nothing.

Right so if it didnโt change intention to vote then itโs measuring different things. โWill I vote for himโ and โis he older than Iโd preferโ are not equivalent concepts to test against each other.

Yeah I mean I fully expect the last two weeks of unhinged screeching by the commentariat to move the needle, itโs just worth repeating that the debate itself did not, at least not measurably.

These AI services talk a big game about what they do and how they provide value but then they use the language of conmen to actually explain features. I can't trust a model that is only 90% confident it summarized a paper accurately. That is a failure condition demanding scrutiny, not a feature.

Elicit was an interesting effort to make searching articles more efficient as Google Scholar decays into nonsense. But they just added a confidence tracker using unknown metrics and locked it behind a paywall. What is the value of only a 90% confidence and who on earth would not check that anyway?

Letโs stick to the text, since thatโs what Iโm discussing here. This op-ed was not about โsome people,โ it was about George Clooney changing his mind at some point in the last two weeks. Everyone is entitled to change their minds, but to make it public policy you owe us deeper explanation than this.

I mean, the snap polls after the debate mostly showed Trump getting higher unfavorables, not Biden. This really does look like an elite panic, not a social one.

What can and probably will change voter preferences is the relentlessly negative drumbeat of media coverage โ which can and will shift public opinion through the sheer volume and inescapability of message. Thatโs why weโre seeing this okay out in the press and not among voters.

The claim that โeveryone saw the debate and turned on Bidenโ seems to be entirely a narrow phenomenon of only a segment of the elite, the same ones sucking all the oxygen out of the room to discuss anything else. I have yet to see a single poll showing him drop out of the margin of error.

Only, let's respond to what was said, rather than assuming something that wasn't. Clooney writes that he thought Biden was too frail to run at the fundraiser he hosted for him, but then waited until now to speak up about it. That isn't new info developing over time, it's motivated reasoning.

This style of "research" is basically that Harvard Ash Center piece on AI and polling from last month, which is absolutely affecting how current polls are structured and analyzed. Asking a computational black box to replicate prior survey results is not research, and yet that is what these are.

Gonna keep banging this drum- it was always on the cards after he came out as the most pro labour president of the 21st century, and probably my lifetime. Like, the man cannot decide whether Biden being old is "new and upsetting information" tantamount to being convicted of 34 felonies, or whether he knew that all along but lied to a room of rich donors while collecting $30 million for Biden three weeks ago. A good editor would have caught this.

And claimed that he was on stage raising $30 million for a man he thought was unfit and shouldn't be there but never spoke up. His judgment was either off then or it's off now, and if it was off then he owes us an explanation for why his judgment is correct now, not just vibes and "dude is old, man"

I think it speaks poorly of Clooney's character to stand on stage and eagerly hustle up $30 million for someone you then turn around and declare that person unfit to hold office. His judgment either failed then or failed now, and if it failed then he owes us an explanation for why he's right now.

I have zero issues with his advocating for his wife, and it was insane that placing Amal on a sanctions list was ever remotely possible. But that really does change what he's calling for and why, and withholding that from readers is fundamentally dishonest.

That is, if we are to be fair and bring facts to the public without fear or favor. The problem is, Kingsbury, the opinion editor, does neither.

I do not judge Clooney for that, I think he was right to do so and the White House was wrong to even hint at sanctioning Amal Clooney for being a lawyer. But having a close family member implicated in the outcome of the race really does place a different frame for his calling on Biden to withdraw.

I dunno, it seems relevant that last month Clooney begged the White House to not sanction his wife over her participation in the ICC case against Israel. But that would soften the criticism and place it into context, which editor Kathleen Kingsbury simply does not consider part of her ethical duty.

Just so we're clear: media executives can choose to not talk about this. "We don't take a stance on the president and we'll do our best to cover the race fairly" is the adult response. "I will work to elect someone who embraces my consolidating an industry" is a tantrum of a statement.

It's fascinating that after the hundreds of millions of dollars Zaslav has set on fire through reckless consolidation he thinks the answer is more, and will thumb CNN's coverage of the election to make sure the next president won't enforce anti-trust laws. Just fascinating.

But my point is Clinton was meeting those conditions and she lost. So, why should we adhere to it? Weโve had tons of evidence that polling is a poor indicator of electoral performance. Why does it only apply to Biden?
