I went to St. Peter's Basilica late on a Tuesday afternoon, and there were chairs already set up in various places because on Wednesday mornings there is an audience with the Pope.

This area was roped off, so I could photograph it and have the illusion of an empty basilica.

The ability of sculptors to create the illusion of flowing fabrics in carved stone blows my mind.

The Altar of St. Leo the Great with Attila, marble relief, 1653. I loved the figures emerging from the stone.

(I did not get a picture of it, but The Madonna della Pietà , a sculpture by Michelangelo, was also being restored. As that was the work of art I was most excited to see in the basilica, I take this as a clear sign that I need to return to Rome someday.)

As sometimes happens, a few key elements of the basilica were undergoing restoration. Here, the Baldacchino di San Pietro, by Bernini, is covered in scaffolding.

A shot that includes people, for realism and for scale. I tend to compose and select shots that do not include the crowds, which makes places seem far emptier than they actually are.

For the most part, instead of actual flame there were artificial candles.

Throughout the basilica, there were gorgeous works of art that looked like paintings. Most are mosaics, and looking closely I was barely able to see the seams between tiles. (Here: a 1767 mosaic of the Transfiguration of Christ on Mount Tabor, copying the 1520 painting by Raphael Sanzio d'Urbino.)

There combination of the scale of the basilica with the level of detail in the art and architecture was truly awe inspiring.

St. Peter's Basilica, a thread. The density of art inside the basilica was surreal, I could easily have taken ten times as many pictures as I did (and I'm only posting a small subset of the shots I took).

It occurs to me, looking through my many pictures of tiny espresso cups, that while part of my issue upon returning home was jet lag, and part was sleep debt...I was also drinking maybe 6 shots of espresso a day by the end of the Italy trip and I definitely am not doing that upon returning home. 🤣

Pasta! I took relatively few photos at meals because I was in such good company that it felt intrusive to be constantly whipping out my phone. So while early morning solo breakfast runs are somewhat over-represented in the set, ALL the food I had in Italy was outstanding.

I like this shot as a contrast to the first shot in the thread (from Palatine Hill) because this shot really shows the way the modern world comes right up to the Colosseum.
