The fun thing about Beverly Hills Cop 2024 isn’t the story itself, which is just as forgettable as that of any 80s action movie, but the fact that the film feels the constant & urgent need to explain away and contextualize the excesses of 80s action movies, like it’s SO embarrassed to be what it is.

Something I learned recently is that the police have virtually no legal obligation to help you or to solve crimes. (This was upheld by the Supreme Court in 2005.) They choose which cases to investigate and which to ignore/abandon, and which laws to enforce, and there’s little you can do about it.

Also, Infinite Jest is a brilliant and pugnacious book that also has some parts that are excessive and parts that don’t work well or haven’t aged well. Wallace was swinging for the fences on every page and they can’t all be home runs.

David Foster Wallace’s prose taught me that the line between “formal” and “informal” writing is entirely arbitrary and that if you love your subject and are passionate about the written word you can write however and whatever the fuck you want and have it be incredible.

I got pulled over the other day for the first time in years and this cop was dressed like she was about to defuse a bomb in a war zone and she acted like we were in a high stakes hostage situation, like what the fuck, man, we are in a Starbucks parking lot in Hillsboro Oregon.
