Here be the personal account of a state-level energy regulator. If you’re looking for JMGinNYC, you’ve found him. (For all the searchers out there: law, regulation, climate, transition, adaptation, NYC, biking.)

True across papers: climate/energy desk pubs accurate coverage of complex issues in power sector; finance/business desk offers outmoded and inaccurate snippets of "conventional wisdom" that have been demonstrably wrong for years. It's like those corners of the professional world in microcosm.

Talking to students about their efforts to make sense of, navigate, and eventually change the world can really help pull a guy back from the brink. (Yes, I'm the guy.)

I'll see you and raise you: I think companies' desire not to be regulated is often reflexive and not grounded in thoughtful analysis of what the lack of regulation in a given instance is likely to mean. So I don't understand *either* of these things.

It's quite the tradition! Reagan did the same thing with the newly established Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

Question for you @kellyhereid.bsky.social:

Do you know of insurers looking to reward building mgmt companies & other policyholders that own/operate large multi-family buildings with lower rates if they can hit certain marks wrt climate-ready investments that address flood, precip and other risks?

Amtrak conducted a climate change vulnerability assessment and resilience review in 2022. Both of those flagged heat as sources of risk to assets and operations. But I don't know what they have done since to address identified vulnerabilities. Seems like something for GAO to ask about.

We've tested out our institutional integrity in the recent Israel/Palestine stress test, and so can say with complete confidence that we are uniquely positioned to conduct research and communicate with the public with integrity regardless of the pressures we feel from politicians, donors, media etc.

Less so for overnight/sleeping. To deal with dangerously hot nights you're really talking about a new category of public facility, or unprecedented repurposing of existing ones.

Tufte talks about calibrating visual depictions of information in order to capture the "least significant difference" -- I find the inverse to be very useful for understanding negotiations over laws / treaties / contacts because it gets at the value of vagueness to negotiating parties.

This is one of those unfortunate instances where it'd very useful for policymaking to know a lot more about household consumptions levels and habits, but gathering and using such info would play very directly into some of the boogeyman stories told about energy transition policy.

Severin Borenstein's research into energy use by income has found that, in California, income does not predict usage disparity all that well, in part because higher income households often have solar panels that offset demand, partly because lower income households tend to live in hotter places.

Oh so we should publish scarier things about the enormous disruptions and costs we're sleepwalking into just because they happen to be true? Is that your argument? 'Cause I don't think that's going to make it past even a junior-level editor, Professor Scarumstraight.

I am a child of the suburbs (1.5 acre lots connected to a city by highway only) who has lived in NYC for 10 years (cumulatively). Living here has made the notion of externalities concrete and self-evident in a 1000 ways. It makes the rhetoric of oppo to congestion pricing all the more baffling.
