This sounds like a good way to end up with bad housing. Surely even the Minister knows you can only ever (at best) have two out three of cheap, good, and fast? He's opting for cheap and fast. That automatically means it won't be good.

Very happy to see Alex Casey has addressed this issue more fully than possible in the limited characters available here.

I don't know what's more trivial: some woman fretting over her sons seeing women in g-string bikinis at the local swimming pools, or me bothering to comment on it (while my eyes roll to the back of my head).

As someone who half-listened to the Disney version of "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" while my niece watched it and I scrolled social media, here's where you've misunderstood the relevant ̶m̶i̶l̶i̶e̶u̶ context (1/65)

Pretty sure I got stung by one of those in Vanuatu. OK, OK, it might have actually only been half that size, but it was still freaking enormous.

Looking at Starmer's cabinet appointments and thinking how useful it must be to be able to appoint people who aren't MPs. I don't think I want an upper house, but some other mechanism could be good?

I can see there's a bit of broken off and deteriorated rubber around the end, which suggests there was once a tube attached, so the pillow makes sense. Maybe I'll just keep it as a squeezy stress ball 🤣

So it is! So, given I've never seen a pillow near it in the years it's sat on my desk, I can dispose of it?!

I'm still surprised they don't, particularly in the corporate/ public sectors, where many employees have generous sick leave provisions. I've just been off work for what would have been 9.5 days if there hadn't been a public holiday at the end. Mr BarTel had similar last year. That's $$$ lost time.

If Tamaki stopping a drag storytime has given him a "head on [a] platter", that would make Tamaki Herodias - the villain in the story of John the Baptist- and drag storytime a prophet of God in at least six different faiths.

Well that sent me off on a path that turned up this delight from 1966: www.jstor.org/stable/588774. I particularly enjoy Douglas's thesis that "demand for oysters and champagne not basic bread and butter triggers social conventions which hold population down". And the last paragraph is 👩‍🍳💋

All those housing character purists should only be allowed to travel in conveyances originally made in or before the year their home was originally built. They're allowed to restore them, but the body must remain the same.

It's funny you say that, because I'm sure a public health mosquito expert once told me that (human-biting) mosquitos are entirely replaceable in the food chain, and could be eliminated without ill effect.

"Dismantled" doesn't work for "crippled" either. "Dismantled with guilt" (or "with anxiety")? "emotionally dismantled"? Those are about the only contexts in which I can imagine using "crippled", and "dismantled" is not it. Paralysed, cramped, or crushed, possibly.

Can someone explain to me why "stupid" is on the right hand list? I've googled it, but I don't see a compelling reason. Also I don't think I've ever seen "dumb" used as "bad". Bad is a bad replacement. There are "daft"-type alternatives . Or, sometimes, speechless ("struck dumb"). But not "bad".

Always worth looking at testing criteria of course, but if you know vaccination rates have dropped a bunch, and that the R0 of 15 - 17 needs 93 - 94% coverage for herd immunity, then insufficient vaccination does seem like a reasonable starting hypothesis.

I completely get that some people love documentaries, and I'm sure this is great work. But I would far rather read the content, because that's how I best process information (particularly an hour's documentary content). Is there any transcript available?

Unfortunately, in Aotearoa, a lot of the renovation of old homes IS necessary. Not everything in all renovations, of course, but basic stuff like improving solar gain, insulation, replacing rot - there's unfortunately a shedload of upgrades to our housing stock still needed.

Setting it to a minimum of 16C when you're not home (or in bed, if you don't use your heat pump for bedroom heating) is a reasonable compromise for better indoor moisture and mould management.

In other news: supposed "last word" advice to not leave your heatpump on 24/7 is NOT the last word. If you absolutely can't afford to, sure. But if you're trying to manage indoor moisture and mould - as most NZers are - you're better to not let indoor temperatures cycle up and down so much.

Then for the MPs who do move to Wellington, they can apply to WINZ to have their housing need assessed in same way other applicants do - and then a similar scenario: build ~60 new units of appropriate sizes, but have the MPs and their families live in whatever stock most needs upgrade.

Re: MP housing. I would like to see a new, well-spec'd ~60+ (non-WLG electorate MPs + however many list MPs live outside WLG) unit studio apartment block built somewhere in central WLG. Then add it to the Kāinga Ora stock, and make the MPs live in whatever nearby KO studios most need upgrade.

Looking at the screenshot of the email in the original post over at the dead bird, it's clearly talking about vaccinations - but the fonts are mismatched, so potentially mischievous. Or just Hanlon's razor.

GPs are busy people. It would be very easy for some mischief-maker to produce something on TWO email letterhead, and send it from an email address approximating something that might look like a TWO account, to a bunch of GP email addresses they'd found on some website(s) somewhere.

The only relevant point in there is the assessment that some developers may be having to sell for more than it cost them to build. If that acts as a dampener on further construction, it's not so great for continuing to improve the supply/demand ratio.

Also - it's daft even from a cost-benefit point of view. Even if you use the lower Transport $200k value of a life year, the death of one 4-year-old comes in at about $15.6m, from about 78 life-years lost. And then there are DALYs as well. I thought ACT liked to think they were rational?

OMG this is horrific. Existing regulations don't do enough to ensure adequate space, staffing levels, or staff welfare (which impacts child welfare). Taking them away will only make things worse.
