Lots of time spent talking with friends - around 4-5 hours a week plus private tutor, self-study and playing games and reading Japanese content. Just doing it as much as I can, basically.

Ya know, there are things to be down about, but I realize that the last year has been great. For instance - getting serious about mastering Japanese after dropping it for so long is a goal I'm following but it also resulted in making wonderful new friends along the way which has enriched every day.

This above all else is something that has become clear. Kindness and empathy has become far too rare.

For me, getting to spend time with and get to know others from all around the world is something I enjoy the most but it feels like so many just hate everyone that's not like 'them'. What the hell happened?

Man, the state of the world really sucks. Feels like there’s nowhere to call home at this point.

Beyond the dithering, it looks and runs better overall on Saturn. I did a comparison in my PS1 launch video and it was eye opening. The difference was a lot more pronounced than expected.

Today marks the end of Retroplace here in Germany. I loved this marketplace. It was a great way to buy and sell games. I cannot sell games on eBay since they removed PayPal support so this was main option aside from private groups. I loved buying there too. Really sucks.

Related but I’ve been listening to Bright Bit Brothers podcast - an enjoyable Japanese retro gaming pod - and I’m really loving hearing the Japanese perspective on the old days including thoughts on the “economic boom”. This Capcom episode has been a blast.

Oh, I’ve been good about that. On Japanese speaking days, we never revert no matter what! That’s been very helpful.

Haven’t found a good solution for this yet. Need to look. Right now, I’m basically doing 3 hours of conversation with Japanese friends, studying on my own and just consuming most media in that language. No actual formal learning, though

That's the thing for me - I studied for a while back between 2005-2008 and reached a decent level...then I stopped and didn't start again until 2023. So there's a giant gap in there which has messed me up.

Glad it's not just me. My learning is all messed up too since I didn't really follow books and there was like a 15 year gap where I stopped studying Japanese and focused on French. Now I'm back to Japanese. I don't fit into any courses or levels at this point and it sucks.

Language learning is a rollercoaster. Some days I really feel like I'm making great progress...then the next I feel as if I should just give up due to inability to grasp certain things. Am I simply incapable? - is a question I ask myself constantly. :\

I too don't really understand sports fandom but, at least in those cases, there's more of a human element driving it, right? There's not really anything like that with consoles.

I feel like brand loyality used to make more sense (provided it was kept in good taste). I genuinely cannot comprehend it these days.

I enjoy modern Xbox and PlayStation consoles, but like, I don't 'love' them. It's not just a nostalgia/retro thing either. The release cadence, the types of games being created, the approach each company is taking...it's strayed so far and I definitely feel left behind.

With all the console drama, some friends and I were discussing how, with both modern Xbox and PlayStation, the platforms have become something entirely different from the consoles we fell in love with. There are good games being made but so much has changed and it's easy to feel somewhat alienated.

I can see that. I'm just in such a different mental place with this stuff as I enjoy owning and playing with basically all games machines. So I don't really feel attached to any of the new systems.

I gotta say, seeing the reactions to the news has sort of given me comfort in that I better understand why the responses to some of our comparison videos seem way too extreme. That's just how, uh, 'passionate' some people are. They seem to care more for the brand rather than the medium itself.

Also this attitude. I think people equate getting review code as just 'getting games for free' - but, in reality, it means lots of work. Getting access early helps keep us sane in terms of hitting deadlines and finding an audience. When I enjoy a game, I always buy a copy to keep as well.

It also gets into why people read reviews. For some it's buying advice, for others it's just interesting to read different takes on a game.

Right and people are cheering that codes weren't sent out because those mean websites might say negative things.

I'm fascinated by the discourse around reviews (SuiSquad). They almost seem to be weaponizing people against reviewers using modern social media psychology. It's sad that people's feelings on reviews seem like "does review align with my preconceived notions?". If no, then review = biased.
