We believe our photo is of H. opalescens as it lacks the white lines on the cerata indicative of H. crassicornis. We find both H. crassicornis and H. opalescens in Monterey Bay, though!

Rosa’s legacy lives on both at the Aquarium and in the wild, where sea otter pups she raised continue to raise pups of their own, contributing to the recovery of their species and their ecosystems along the California coast.

After an exam, the veterinary and animal care teams made the difficult choice to humanely euthanize Rosa because those health conditions were compromising her quality of life. She passed away peacefully, surrounded by her caretakers.

Wild female sea otters live between 15-20 years. At 24 years old Rosa, despite receiving the best care, showed age-related health concerns in recent years. In the last few weeks, her health deteriorated.

“Rosa was one of our most playful sea otters, and even at 24 years old, she would still be seen frolicking and wrestling with the younger otters when she instigated it,” said Melanie Oerter, curator of mammals.

Hello Aquarium family. It’s with great sadness that we share that our beloved sea otter Rosa passed away today. At 24 years old, Rosa was the oldest resident otter at the Aquarium and one of the longest-lived individuals of her species.

When you're trying to hide from Monday but it finds you anyway 🐟😜💙 Grunt sculpins, the disguise champions of the underwater realm, blend into their rocky habitats, taking shelter in vacant barnacle shells, and execute the “sculpin shuffle” as they move, hop, or crawl over rocks.

By using rocks or shells to crack open hard-shelled prey, female otters, who may have less robust jaws than males,  can eat bigger prey without risking dental damage. This helps females get the high number of calories they need, especially when raising pups.

Sea otters are well-known for using tools, like rocks, to break open shelled prey. But a recent study, done in collaboration with Aquarium researchers, sheds light on a fascinating detail: it's mainly the female otters that use tools for this purpose.
