We must start thinking outside the box to address these new issues and develop new approaches. We also need to evaluate what happens within the intermediate periods, which has not been tested, as we tend to focus only on extreme scenarios.

The outer atolls of the Marshalls (ie, all the atolls other than Majuro and Kwajalein) have lost nearly half their population in the last ten years. Never in post-war history had the remote atolls even come close to such a drop-off.

Despite model uncertainties, agreement between different models on distributional shifts suggests that it is not a question of ‘IF’ the tuna biomass will shift due to climate change from the Pacific SIDS EEZs but ‘WHEN’ and ‘TO WHAT EXTENT’.

When I worked more at the food-producing level (i.e., fishing, working with people to catch more fish, and maintaining that fish in better conditions for longer), I felt more useful than with some of the jobs I do today… and I struggle with that.
