You want a certain part of important products to be made near you. We all saw how easy container shipping could be interrupted. Vertical farming is only for fresh products or that need to picked by humans. In VF you can add productivity to the workers by making fruits easier to pick.

In cities like Detroit you have a lot of space that can be used and where you need jobs for the local population. Aquaponic can also add value to the vegetables that are produced. We should not strive for autarky again, that would be stupid but it is important not to become too dependent.
