But making Gatsby the example shows, again, the problem with making the focus of English education be on *learning the canon* instead of interpretation and argument. I'm begging teachers to do their "Intro to Critical Analysis" with Goosebumps and James Patterson.

In college required freshman English (which you might well have also had to take, since we went to the same school) used War of the Worlds. I don't remember the curriculum at all, but I thought it was neat that we had a textbook comparing the radio and printed versions.
