It's a silly problem really... there should be an agreement that if you use an email as a corresponding author then the institution agrees to keep it alive in perpetuity. I can't see that the overheads would be massive, even if it's not an active mailbox but a bounce "to contact X mail personal@y.z"

It's very dumb, but I think illustrative of how the whole academic system assumes things about people & employment that aren't true and haven't been for decades.
