There are sections of railway which have relatively low bridges, requiring substantial works and closures to resolve. Those potentially could be avoided with the overhead line & battery approach.

As well as the carbon they make such a difference to air quality and noise in the stations. And we've now got hybrid thirdrail/battery units running in Liverpool, to extend the network beyond the electrified area onto old diesel lines.
