From a 2019 thread: Yesterday somebody asked me not to use a word because of its connections with oppression and I went through all the stages of "Don't Tell Me I Can't Use That Word." In my head. And then I got to, "Yeah, okay, I can omit that word from my vocabulary." Decency takes intention.

I think such a reaction is because these words go to the core of how "the human" has been historically (and personally) defined, ie, "the human" is defined against an other who cannot be human because of their difference. 1/2

I had to step back and process and not just react and examine why I was feeling certain ways and think about what I know about harmful language.
