In 2010 Joe Lieberman switched sides to filibuster his own law because it was more important that Republicans be allowed to block Democratic legislation if they wanted to than that the majority party be allowed to enact policy they campaigned on and won back to back landslide victories from.

That's The Assumption: passing legislation with only Democratic votes is inherently illegitimate, even if they were elected with landslide majorities. Republicans only must always be consulted, and must have veto power over anything they dislike. No matter what elections, or the law, has to say.
