Could this also be a result of people moving down market from more expensive restaurants?

Exactly my thought. Back in 2008 / 2009, a pizza place near us said that while many places were struggling due to the economy slump, they were doing great because those that normally went to sit down restaurants were now buying pizza instead.

Don't know, seems many mid tier chain sit down restaurants or diners can compete with fast food now. Places like Olive Garden can often beat the large combo meal price. or for savings, order a large pizza where the leftovers are a meal, too.
