I think the point though is that many (non-white) Americans who have only experienced the US have experienced it as authoritarian.

I think that's the core problem, though - white people have absolutely experienced it as authoritarian. As the authority / subject of rather than the object of. And there's denialism of that on the left (I am oppressed by class!) and embracing of it by three right.
