without a bit of irony I'd say such citizens are smarter, more adaptable, braver, less selfish, and more patriotic in the best sense than their authoritarian counterparts (in the same countries)

The stakes of politics are control of state power. No domestic militia or insurgency stands much chance against the USA. Fighting overseas, we can always go home. Fighting here, we'll keep coming. And that's why elections matter.
