Having waste sorted does not change the amount of waste residents produce. We'll still have bins on sidewalks. Trash will never "help the environment". The first of the three "Rs" is "reduce". Legislation to stop over-packaging and types of materials would be a good start.

It’s complex. Federation of Municipalities supposed to work w manufacturers to reduce packaging. Also right of repair; tech to stop making products disposable. Change growth economy to sustainable. We don’t need bins. Ppl use bags in em; other cities use bags. Sidewalks cleared when bags picked up.
