late 3rd edition D&D was a fascinating time full of products that nobody asked for and nobody knew what to do with, like Magic of Incarnum, Weapons of Legacy, Tome of Magic, Tome of Battle, etc.

Time of Battle was clearly (in retrospect) a 4e test case/trial balloon. Incarnum? Uh, that never went anywhere. Weapons of Legacy had an idea, but that idea got explicitly rejected by later versions
