Zesty Jesus’s video ‘No One’s Home’ goes over the numbers, but along with trolls flooding servers with aimbots, essentially the player counts are inflated by bots mining for items in private servers. This all in service of a quasi-crypto market fueled by the steam market.

While it’s easy to identify horrible endemic corporate behavior within Bizzard and other gaming companies; what plagues TF2 is a systemic problem across the internet as a whole that involves ai and cryptocurrency. I saw the problem during COVID and it’s sad it hasn’t changed.
