yes! meet people where they're at, make friends at the grocery store or the dog park and go from there. i know it's counterproductive for our form of organizing, but in rural areas facebook is a huge help for events and community stuff.

Met an Anglican priest in a rural bookshop on holiday a few years back and he showed me a bizarre historical chapel I'd not have otherwise seen.

I found Meetup great in new places. Stumbled upon a group while travelling & homesick, had the site explained to me, & used it to find weird & wonderful things to do. Find book groups, sports clubs, knitting circles, hiking buddies, etc.
