Like, our own country literally HAD a famously horrific civil war and we are STILL dealing with the aftermath. And of course MODERN civil wars are in many ways worse, since they tend to involve death squads coming to your house and shooting you.

Now there’s a terrifying alternate history concept. The American Civil War, but postponed to 1965 instead of 1865.
