I find this is one of the things that often surprises American visitors to both London and Paris: that public transport is, by a significant margin, the FASTEST way to travel even relatively long distances.

Years ago I had a two-month assignment in Portsmouth where they gave me a rental car for the duration. Told my colleagues I was going up to London on the weekend and should I take the car? Was FIRMLY told that wasn't a good idea!
