(I prefer Barrett's resolution of this hypothetical, but the argument that the circuit decision was so broad SCOTUS had to hear an appeal, has something going for it).

There is protection for the president, in the form of the office of legal counsel. And beyond that, the protections afforded every monied criminal defendant in our system. There is no additional “protection” for anyone, President or otherwise, _permitted_ under the Constitution.
