Nothing illustrates that better than Jenny Colgan on Comfort Blanket working out that Arnie in the Terminator isn’t the story at all. He’s just a plot timer. An oncoming truck. A deadline for the romance to blossom. “Arnie is the prom” is my favourite writing insight in ages. That’s plot v story.

One of the reasons every Terminator sequel bar the second has failed is they make the mistake of thinking the films are about time travel and robots when those are just plot mechanics in the first one.
